Two very young princesses (or princes) are sent as hostages to the castle of their country’s enemy.
Everything will be fine, they’ll be welcomed as part of the family, just as long as their father, the King, keeps his promise not to go to war against their captor, the Emperor.
Everything will be fine.
Well, ok, so, the Emperor’s own children can’t stop squabbling with each other long enough to make friends. And sure, a mysterious message shows up warning them they’re in danger.
But everything will be fine.
Unless the war trumpets start to blow…
All the King’s Children was inspired by the true story of two French princes who were taken hostage in 1525 by the Holy Roman Emperor in exchange for their father’s promise that he would not, once again, start a war. In our version of Renaissance Europe all gender identities are considered equal and girls are just as likely as boys to grow up to rule countries and lead armies.
CASTING NOTES: All the King’s Children is suitable for performance by young people from diverse cultural backgrounds, aged between ten and eighteen. All roles have been written to be played by young people of any gender. Pronouns and terms like princess in the script have been written to correlate to the gender identities of the actors in the original cast and should be changed to correlate to the actors of future productions.
