EXTRACT: To those who I haven't already spoken to, it's official. Internal affairs has launched a investigation into our activities. There's a big whale splashing around in the bay. Now I can see a few of you younger ones are probably concerned. Well, don't be. These inquiries happen now and then, and they're always furphies. They're initiated by some faction or other in College Street Headquarters to try and make a name for themselves or to score some points off another faction. They splutter along for a while and then they die out.

EXTRACT: This morning. The Assistant Commissioner drew my attention to this at the outset of my interview for the Inspector's training course. Made me read it aloud. Please explain he said..I said it was bullshit. I said we ought to sue. What were you doing there in the first place, he said. I said because I was invited, he's a prominent businessman in the area, we had an obligation to be there, along with other local figures. lt was part of our campaign to reach out into the community, the Commissioner's initiative, if I may remind you.
