Michael Grant is a businessman from the suburbs. Wayne Stevens is a killer, living in an unpredictable world of crime, drugs and violence, constantly teetering on the edge of life and death. Grant and Stevens want each other’s lives.

Grant’s violent longings are quelled by domestic concerns and his inability to escape from ordinariness, while Stevens yearns to become the quintessential suburbanite. When their paths finally cross, it seems they may have the opportunity to exchange fates. Shots explores Melbourne’s different worlds, and the ways in which they coexist — and sometimes collide.

EXTRACT: The man who plays me can hear the crossing beeping outside. He can see them all standing on the footpath. The green man is beeping at them, but they're not going anywhere. He sounds like a machine gun trying to shoot them all down. The shots are so loud the man who plays me can hear them from his office. The man who plays me knows that when you fire a gun it breaks the sound barrier. The 'bang!' shoots straight through space and sound and time. You stand on one side. They stand on the other. You shoot.

EXTRACT: And he held it up as high as he could because he knew it would make you scared and sad and he wanted to make you sad because then maybe you would stop yelling. And when he held up the vase you went so quiet so quickly, and he was a bit scared of all that quiet but he kept holding it up. And then you pointed your finger at him, like it was a gun, and you said 'Wayne Stevens, if you drop that vase, that's it.'
