EXTRACT: I am dragged in front of the Reverend Mother and reprimanded for "swearing". I do not know this word "swearing". I am still little. And she will not help me. But somewhere inside me I do know that talking in my beloved Maltese has put me in a space capsule - isolated, alone, and the object of derision. I know now the meaning of the word "fear".
