TAKING LIBERTY

$5.40$15.00

This fast-moving documentary comedy/drama shows how sailor John Bertrand, financier Alan Bond and designer-savant Ben Lexcen joined forces to win the America’s Cup.

Narration from each of the three men is woven through dramatised episodes from the story/history, beginning with a brief surrealistic interweaving of their early memories until the drama itself begins to coalesce around the 'first campaign' in 1974, which they lose. They keep losing (and Bond keeps losing money) all the way through the first act. The second act covers the 1983 campaign, which the Australians keep losing.

Until, at last, they win.

Taking Liberty was first produced by Perth Theatre Company in 2008.
