THE REHEARSAL

$5.40$10.00

It’s the first meeting of the new season for a small-town theatre group. And the first meeting for Sophie, a drama student. As the meeting progresses, Sophie’s suggestions raise the ire of Val, the group’s leader who finally loses it and threatens Sophie with a knife. After a dramatic monologue Val turns the knife on herself and kills herself. After a pause, the rest of the group break into applause and Val gets up and bows. Sophie is horrified. After some explanations Sophie goes to leave, but changes her mind and joins the group.

EXTRACT: You got big dreams, you want Fame. Well, join the club. We all wanted fame. Do you think it was my childhood dream to own a shop? No. I wanted to be a famous actress, just like you do. But how many really make it to the top? Most of us just get chewed up by life and spat out at the bottom of the pile.
