THE UNSPOKEN WORD IS ‘JOE’

$5.40$15.00

It really is an honour to be here tonight to see what – not one of our greatest writers, just yet – but certainly one of our most emerging writers, has in store for us.

Zoey Dawson has written a play. She would describe it as beautiful and tender. And sad and funny. And also really clever, and really honest, and really raw and emotional. It’s about a break-up – but it’s not just a breakup play. It’s got lots of others layers to it. Yeah. Layers. It’s, like... It’s a really good play. She hopes you like it. A lot.

“Zoey Dawson doesn’t break the rule so much as bludgeon it to death and take liberties with the corpse” THE AGE / ★★★★

"Fiendishly clever, sidesplittingly funny, unlike anything I've ever seen before" TIME OUT SYDNEY/ ★★★★1/2

Female | 20s | 3 to 5 minutes
Starts on page 17

EXTRACT: I sleep with the lights on. I say goodbye instead of hello, accidentally. I think I’ve said something. But I haven’t said anything. I’ve done the opposite of something. I’ve done less than something. I’ve done nothing. I’ve… I’m nothing wrong. I’ve done nothing wrong. I never. I never. (She can’t finish) This bit is really hard to achieve without the proper staging. Griffin wouldn’t give us enough money, but what I really want to happen in this bit is that gold glitter will start to rain down from the sky.

I sleep with the lights on. I say goodby

EXTRACT: I am alone. I am in the middle of a road. I am very scared. I take a very small step forward. Then I take a very small step back. I get into bed and I watch some computer. I eat some fridge. I dream of waking up and getting ready for work. Wouldn’t that be lovely? I sleep with the lights on. I say goodbye instead of hello, accidentally. I think I’ve said something. But I haven’t said anything. I’ve done the opposite of something. I’ve done less than something. I’ve done nothing.
