Will Shakespeare is mugged after drinking at the Bear's Head Tavern one night. The stranger who rescues him and takes him home is "an out-of -work actor specialising in the portrayal of ghosts". He sets out to persuade Will to write parts for him. Will is reluctant, until the stranger discovers that the writer has been stealing plays from his peers. Under threat of exposure, Will enters into a pact with the stranger. But is he dealing with a man or a poltergeist? And what does he risk if he guesses wrongly?
