She is anxious about doing a 'Welcome to Country' speech—the first in her town.

Mavis' talent for storytelling ensures that her grandchildren obediently listen. She talks about events from her past and events of Aboriginal history and briefly outlines the issues that Native Title has created for this country and community. Through justifying her views and reinforcing in her grandchildren pride in their Aboriginal identity, she comes to terms with accepting the role of public speaker—if only to support her community-minded daughter.
