Suzie Miller is a playwright, screenwriter and librettist; her plays have been produced in 40 productions around the world and have won a multitude of awards. Miller is drawn to complex personal stories, often exploring injustice, a passion Miller carries from her previous life as a human rights lawyer. She is a graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, (NIDA) Australia, has a Masters in Theatre/Film, Honours degree in Science and a Masters of Law.
Miller’s plays have been performed in Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and America. Her most recent theatre productions include PRIMA FACIE (Griffin Theatre, 2019; Winner of the 2018 Griffin Theatre National Playwrights’ Award); THE MATHEMATICS OF LONGING (La Boite Theatre, 2018); THE CAUSALITY PRINCIPLE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE (University of Wollongong, 2018); SUNSET STRIP (Griffin Theatre, 2017; National Tour 2019); CARESS/ACHE (Griffin Theatre, 2015); VELVET EVENING SÉANCE (Developed in Scotland by the Jerwood Foundation and Cove Park Scotland, 2017; Toured Scotland including a 3-week season at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival); MEDEA (La Boite Theatre, 2015); DUST (Black Swan Theatre Company, 2014; Winner of WA Premier’s Award for Script, 2016), ONEFIVEZEROSEVEN (Barking Gecko Theatre Company, Perth Festival, 2014); DRIVING INTO WALLS (Barking Gecko Theatre Company, Perth Festival, 2013); THE SACRIFICE ZONE (Theatre Gargantua Toronto, 2013); SOLD (Theatre 503, London, 2011; Old Fitz Theatre, Sydney, 2007). Other works include; dance/theatre work OVEREXPOSED (Performing Lines, WA State Theatre, 2014) and new Australian opera SNOW WHITE (Queensland Opera/La Boite Theatre & Brisbane Festival, 2016).
Miller also writes for film and television, her feature film adaptions of DUST and PRIMA FACIE are both currently in development with Bunya Productions. And for Matchbox Pictures, Miller is developing an original concept for television.
Amongst other awards and nominations, some highlights include the following achievements; 2018 National Griffin Theatre Playwright’s Award; 2016 WA Premier’s Award for Script/Drama; 2008 National Kit Denton Fellowship for writing with courage; 2013 Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Radio; 2009 Inscription Award; 2006-2009 mentorship with Edward Albee; 2012 Best New Play Irish Times; 2008 New York Fringe Festival ‘Overall Excellence Award for Outstanding Playwriting. Productions of her plays have also won 9 equity awards, various Helpmann Awards, critical awards and have been in the yearly best-of lists of various Australian and international media outlets.
Miller has enjoyed many residencies throughout her career, in recent times these have included; University of Queensland (Creative Fellow 2018), Currency Press (2018 and 2019), National Theatre of Scotland (2014), National Theatre in London (2011 and 2009), Griffin Theatre Sydney (2012), Critical Stages NSW (2013), Theatre Gargantua Toronto (2013), and was the Artist in Resident at La Boite Theatre (2016 and 2015). She was attached to Ex Machina in Quebec with Robert Lepage (2012) and has been commissioned by companies in Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland and Canada.
Miller sits on the theatre committee of the AWG and the boards of various theatre companies.
